Mahama urges world leaders to protect progress made since 1995 Beijing Declaration

President John Dramani Mahama has called on global leaders to prioritize safeguarding the progress made in advancing the rights of women and other vulnerable groups since the landmark 1995 Beijing Declaration.

Speaking at the opening session of the 2025 Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, President Mahama emphasized the need for renewed commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly in Africa, where many women remain vulnerable.

He urged African leaders to invest significantly in initiatives that promote the welfare and advancement of women.

The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women brings together heads of state, government leaders, international organizations, and representatives from across continents to accelerate gender equality and promote women’s empowerment.

This year’s gathering focuses on generating fresh momentum to sustain global advocacy and progress on women’s issues.

President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to gender equality, highlighting recent milestones such as the passage of the Affirmative Action Act, which seeks to enhance women’s participation in governance and decision-making.

He noted that gender equality is not only a matter of justice but also a cornerstone of sustainable development.

“When women thrive, families prosper, communities become stronger, and nations grow,” he said, calling for collective global action to protect and build on the gains achieved over the past three decades.
