A member of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee and MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has taken on President John Mahama over his comments on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road Project, accusing him of twisting the facts for political advantage.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, Mr. Asenso-Boakye said the President’s remarks were misleading and unfair to the previous Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration.
“This is yet another unfortunate attempt to misrepresent well-established facts,” he said. “It is simply an effort to disgrace the Akufo-Addo government and take glory for himself.”
During his inspection of the ongoing project, President Mahama reportedly asked, “A loan was taken for the project, so why is the money finished and the road undone?”
But the former Roads and Highway Minister insisted the explanation was clear.
He explained that the Government of Ghana, under Akufo-Addo, secured a $200 million loan from Afreximbank, but this was only part of the financing plan.
“The Afreximbank facility was always intended to be a partial financing instrument,” he clarified. “The total cost of the 33 km dual carriageway project is $346.4 million, and the balance was expected to come from government budgetary allocations.”
He argued that President Mahama should have known this since the details were included in the official handing-over notes.
“Unless he has been wrongly briefed, he is fully aware of this arrangement,” the Bantama MP said.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye urged Ghanaians to focus on facts rather than politics.
“This is not the time to play politics with infrastructure,” he cautioned. “It is a time for facts, transparency, and steady progress geared towards the future and development of our beloved country, Ghana.”
