Mahama to open African Court in Arusha

President John Dramani Mahama will depart Accra on Sunday, March 1, for Arusha, Tanzania, where he is expected to open the 2026 judicial year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He will attend the ceremony on Monday, March 2, as Special Guest of Honour, marking a historic moment as the first sitting Ghanaian President invited to address the continental court.

The event will also officially launch activities commemorating the court’s 20th anniversary under the theme, “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”

During his visit, President Mahama is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and cooperation ties between Ghana and Tanzania.

President Mahama is expected to return to Ghana after the ceremony on Monday. In his absence, the Vice President will act in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, based in Arusha, serves as the judicial arm of the African Union’s human rights system, tasked with ensuring the protection of human and peoples’ rights across the continent.
