President John Dramani Mahama will on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, lead a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument as part of activities centred on reparatory justice.

Serving as the African Union Champion for Reparations, he is expected to pay tribute to the memory of enslaved Africans, marking a significant moment of remembrance ahead of a landmark resolution at the United Nations.

On Wednesday, the President will address the United Nations General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, where he will present Ghana’s position on reparatory justice.

The position, already adopted by the African Union, calls for the formal recognition of the transatlantic slave trade and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

As part of his itinerary, President Mahama will also visit Lincoln University, where he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address. He will further engage members of the Ghanaian community at Temple University.

The visit underscores Ghana’s continued leadership role in advancing global conversations on historical justice, restitution, and the enduring impact of slavery.
