President John Dramani Mahama has hailed the Buz Stop Boys for their commitment to keeping Ghana’s towns and cities clean, describing their work as a shining example of community service.
Speaking at the re-launch of National Sanitation Day in Madina on Saturday, September 6, 2025, the President lauded the group’s voluntary efforts and pledged government’s support.
As part of the recognition, he donated logistics on behalf of government, including 200 wheelbarrows, 300 shovels, 300 brooms, 300 hand gloves, 280 standing brushes, 20 short brushes, and 300 plastic buckets to aid their clean-up campaigns.
Mahama recalled first learning about the group’s work on social media in 2024 when they appealed for assistance. He responded by providing them with a tricycle to help transport their tools and waste.
“We want to honour these selfless, community-spirited young people who, for years, have used their own resources, energy, and strength to keep our cities clean,” he said.
Founder and leader of the Buz Stop Boys, Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, expressed gratitude to the President for the recognition and assured that the group would remain committed to its mission of environmental stewardship.
Meanwhile, government announced that beginning in October 2025, the first Saturday of every month will be observed as National Sanitation Day across the country, with all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) participating.
The initiative, originally launched in 2014 during Mahama’s first term, forms part of broader efforts to improve sanitation nationwide.
