President John Dramani Mahama has received the final report of the Transition Committee tasked with reintegrating the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) into the University of Ghana, accompanied by a proposed 10-year roadmap to transform the facility into a fully fledged academic health institution.

The report, presented at the Presidency, outlines a structured plan to restore UGMC’s original role as a teaching, research, and referral hospital directly linked to the University of Ghana’s health training institutions.

In his remarks, President Mahama said the report would be carefully studied before being forwarded to Cabinet for further consideration and a final policy decision.

He thanked members of the committee for their dedication, describing their work as a vital contribution to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare and medical education system.

“University of Ghana Medical Centre is our highest quaternary medical facility in this country. Indeed, it’s of world-class standard, and we want to see it maintain that standard both in terms of clinical care and logistics and equipment. So, we want to find the best path to ensure the hospital remains at this standard,” he stated.

The President emphasized that addressing infrastructure, staffing, financing, and academic integration will be critical to positioning UGMC as a leading academic health facility in the country.

Professor Aaron Lawson, Co-Chair of the Committee, noted that UGMC has recorded significant progress since its establishment in 2017, including growth in patient numbers and staff strength. However, the assessment also identified key gaps requiring sustained government support and investment to fully realize the centre’s mandate.

According to Professor Lawson, the committee reviewed operations at UGMC, the University of Ghana Medical School, the College of Health Sciences, and other allied institutions to ensure a coordinated system.

Presenting the document, he said the recommendations were carefully developed to realign UGMC with its academic purpose while improving healthcare delivery, research output, and professional training.

The reintegration process is expected to enhance collaboration between UGMC and the University of Ghana, improve specialist training, and boost research and service delivery in the health sector.
