President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, for spearheading demolition exercises to clear illegal structures from parts of the Sakumo Ramsar site.
He described the move as a tough but necessary step to protect wetlands and enforce environmental laws.
Speaking at the relaunch of National Sanitation Day on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Ogbojo, Accra, President Mahama noted that local authorities should have acted earlier to prevent encroachment. He cautioned that district officials who fail in their duties risk dismissal.
“The filling of the Ramsar site was not a one-day event; it had been going on for a long time. Some even had permits. A DCE like that should be sacked immediately,” he said, while praising Ocloo’s decisive action.
For her part, the Regional Minister urged Ghanaians to support the “Clean Up Ghana Agenda” and take collective responsibility for a healthier environment.
She pledged that the Regional Coordinating Council, in partnership with all 29 MMDAs, would mobilize communities and provide logistics to sustain the campaign.
The relaunched National Sanitation Day will now be observed on the first Saturday of every month, bringing together households, businesses, and public institutions to clean their surroundings and uphold environmental standards.
