President John Mahama has revealed that government, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will soon begin the strict enforcement of axle-weight limits for heavy-duty trucks operating across the country.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the dualisation of the Takoradi–Cape Coast road under the Big Push initiative, the President expressed deep concern over how overloaded vehicles accelerate the deterioration of Ghana’s roads.
He explained that poor enforcement of axle-weight regulations, inadequate weighbridge facilities, and cases of equipment tampering have allowed overloaded trucks to ply the roads unchecked, leading to frequent damage and high maintenance costs.
President Mahama emphasised that the renewed enforcement drive will ensure greater compliance, protect the nation’s road infrastructure, and enhance safety for all users.
He also highlighted the significance of the Takoradi–Cape Coast dualisation project, noting that upon completion, it is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities by up to 50 percent. Although the project is scheduled to last 24 months, contractors have assured government of an earlier completion.
Additionally, the President announced that construction work on the Western Regional Hospital Project, which has been on hold for two years and currently stands at 27 percent completion, will soon resume and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
