Mahama announces Catholic University and Regional Hospital for Damongo

-

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans for the establishment of two major national projects in Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region — a Catholic Science and Technology University and a new regional hospital.

According to the President, the two initiatives aim to enhance access to higher education and quality healthcare in northern Ghana while promoting science, technology, and medical training.

The announcement was made when the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House in Accra.

President Mahama disclosed that initial funding for the university would come from a grant pledged by the President of China, explaining that the project forms part of his administration’s broader vision to expand education through strategic global partnerships.

He added that the proposed regional hospital will serve as a teaching facility for the university’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, which will train medical doctors and allied health professionals.

“The regional hospital shall also serve as a teaching facility for the proposed Catholic Science and Technology University, which will have a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train medical doctors and other allied health professionals,” he noted.

President Mahama also reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to equip young people with employable skills.

He commended the Catholic Church for its longstanding contributions to education, healthcare, and national development.

Archbishop Naameh and his team proposed both the name and location for the new university and raised key issues affecting education and social welfare in northern Ghana.

The meeting was attended by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu; Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari; Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President; and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
