Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has responded to comments about her appearance with a mix of humour and confidence.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Chief Officer addressed claims by some Ghanaians that she appears to be asleep during public functions. She explained that the perception stems from the natural size of her eyes rather than any lack of attentiveness.

“I hear a lot of those comments, and I just laugh. People claim I sleep when I sit down. So now I’ve decided to hold my eyes open with both hands while walking, just so people will know I’m wide awake,” she joked.

According to her, she was simply created with small eyes and has no reason to feel uncomfortable about it. She added that she appreciates her appearance and is not troubled by public commentary.

“This is how God created me. My directors often tell me that despite the size of my eyes, I don’t wear glasses, while those with bigger eyes do. I often tell them, ‘That’s how God works,’” she said.

Ms. Ntow Sarpong, who made history as the first woman to lead the Ghana National Fire Service, emphasized that criticism about her appearance does not affect her because she has developed a strong sense of resilience.

“If it’s your perception that I am asleep, then live with it just to please yourself. I am not bothered,” she added.
