Lead with unity, uphold ethics – Outgone GIBA President to new executives

Outgone President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Cecil Thomas Sunkwa-Mills, has urged the newly inaugurated Executive Council to lead with unity, integrity, and a renewed commitment to ethical broadcasting.

Delivering his final address at the GIBA Executive Council investiture ceremony held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Mr. Sunkwa-Mills reminded the new leadership that their mandate carries great responsibility to protect the credibility and independence of Ghana’s broadcasting industry.

He encouraged the new executives, led by President Abdulai Awudu to maintain GIBA as a platform for inclusive dialogue and decisive action.

He stressed that only through unity and collective purpose can the association advance the interests of broadcasters across the country.

Mr. Sunkwa-Mills further appealed to the council to uphold the highest standards of ethics and accuracy, describing them as the most powerful defence against misinformation and public distrust.

“Maintain and elevate our commitment to ethics, accuracy, and public interest journalism; this is our core value and our strongest defence against disinformation,” he said.

He reiterated that the future of broadcasting will depend on strong leadership anchored in fairness and professional standards.

“Leadership is not a position; it is an act of service. Remain assertive in defence of press freedom, yet open to partnership; be bold in innovation, yet rooted in the public service mission that defines our profession.”

Mr. Sunkwa-Mills expressed confidence in the ability of the new GIBA President, Abdulai Awudu, and his team to lead the association to greater heights, pledging his continued support to advance the industry’s shared goals.

The investiture brought together key figures from Ghana’s media and communications landscape, including representatives from the National Communications Authority (NCA), the National Media Commission (NMC), the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).
