Lawyer clarifies circumstances surrounding Kofi Akpaloo’s arrest by EOCO [Audio]

The lawyer for Kofi Akpaloo, founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has refuted claims that his client and his wife are both in custody.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Enoch Afoakwa said while Mr. Akpaloo was cautioned in connection with ongoing investigations, he has not been formally charged with any offence.

“The matter under investigation relates to a commercial dispute currently before the Commercial Division of the Accra High Court. He has not been formally charged but has been cautioned on some offences under investigation,” Afoakwa explained.

He clarified that Mr. Akpaloo was the only person involved in the case and insisted that his wife is not in custody. “It is only him. His wife is not in custody. It is not true,” he said.

Afoakwa also called on the media to avoid spreading misinformation, warning that false reports could harm the reputation of state institutions. “The media is there to inform, educate, and entertain. But when there is misinformation, it can damage the reputation of the state institution,” he added.

He praised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for its professional handling of the case. “Even when they brought him from Kumasi, it was very pleasant. They offered us chilled water and took us in. The way they are handling this case—devoid of intimidation—is commendable,” he said.

Mr. Akpaloo was picked up by EOCO officials on Wednesday morning, but his legal team insists the matter is strictly a commercial dispute being addressed by both EOCO and the courts.
