Lawyer advises Gertrude Torkonoo to retire after removal as Chief Justice

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has advised Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to consider retiring from the Supreme Court following her removal as Chief Justice.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Ansa-Asare noted that although Justice Torkonoo remains a justice of the Supreme Court under Article 71 of the Constitution, she may no longer find fulfillment in continuing her role.

“I would advise her to retire because if she goes back, she won’t be happy. Under the Constitution, she is still a justice of the Supreme Court unaffected by what has happened,” he said.

Justice Torkonoo was dismissed from office on September 1, 2025, after a Committee of Inquiry chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang recommended her removal for stated misbehaviour.

The Committee was established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution following a petition against her after her suspension on April 22, 2025.

President John Mahama, acting under Article 146(9), accepted the recommendation, making Justice Torkonoo the first Chief Justice to be removed under this constitutional provision.
