The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that the fire that gutted a Chinese warehouse at Lartebiokorshie in Accra is still burning and may take time to be fully extinguished.
GNFS Head of Public Relations, DO2 Desmond Ackah, explained that the blaze, which started around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, has been difficult to control due to the highly flammable materials stored inside, including rubber slippers, leather bags, and other synthetic items.
“The fire is still burning strongly. These materials reignite even after being doused,” DO2 Ackah said.
While unconfirmed reports suggested possible fatalities, the GNFS confirmed that no deaths have been recorded.
However, two firefighters and one civilian sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Firefighters are using heavy equipment, including excavators, to dig through layers of debris and reach unburnt materials fueling the fire.
“We’re working with excavators to access materials buried deep inside. That’s the only way to put it out completely,” DO2 Ackah added.
He commended the resilience of the firefighting team but appealed for urgent logistical and resource support from the government, NGOs, and philanthropists to boost operations.
Residents living near the warehouse expressed anxiety over the prolonged blaze and thick smoke. “We haven’t slept properly since the fire started. The smoke is too much, and we fear it could spread to our homes,” one resident told Adom News.
