Lands Minister revokes 278 small-scale mining licenses over regulatory breaches

-

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has withdrawn 278 small-scale mining licenses across Ghana for various regulatory violations and the expiration of operational permits.

The development was announced by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer at the Ministry, in a Facebook post.

According to Mr. Schandorf, the revocation is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to reform and regularise Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

The affected licenses reportedly include those of operators who failed to meet key operational requirements or continued mining after their permits had expired.

This action, he noted, reflects Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah’s renewed drive to promote accountability and discipline within the small-scale mining industry — a sector that has long faced challenges from illegal operations and environmental damage.

The Ministry has indicated that further details on the affected concessions will be shared soon, along with measures to support responsible miners who operate within the legal and environmental framework.
