A private legal practitioner and historian, Anokye Frimpong, has described the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport as a bold and commendable step.
According to Mr. Frimpong, it is inappropriate for a major national facility to bear the name of a leader who came to power through a coup d’état rather than a democratic mandate.
“A leader who overthrew a legitimately elected government through a coup d’état should not be immortalised in this manner,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Angel TV.
He praised Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, for announcing the decision, describing it as a significant step toward correcting historical wrongs.
“The Majority Leader’s announcement is a great step in the right direction. I urge the Minority in Parliament to support this bill so it can be passed without delay,” Mr. Frimpong said.
He further called on the general public to rally behind the government to ensure the successful implementation of the change.
“Ghanaians must strongly support the government in making this happen as soon as possible. It is about national values, history, and democratic principles,” he added.
Lawyer Frimpong’s comments come after the Majority Leader briefed the media on the bills the government intends to lay before Parliament when it resumes sitting.
In the same breath, he commended Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for promoting national unity through symbolic leadership.
“I applaud the Minority Leader for putting up a statue of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and J.B. Danquah in a handshake at his constituency. It is a powerful symbol of reconciliation and national cohesion,” he noted.
