A security taskforce of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has impounded 30 commercial vehicles for charging unapproved fares at night.
The drivers were arrested at Santasi for charging passengers high transport fares.
The fare from Santasi to Ahenema Kokobeng is three cedis, but the drivers allegedly charge 10 cedis which inconvenient passengers on the stretch.
Leader of the taskforce, Sargent Sampson Dadzie, said all drivers arrested will be put before court for prosecution.
“We are doing this to help clean the system, there hasn’t been an increment in transportation fares, why should you charge overboard? With this kind of attitude how will the nation develop?” he quizzed.
Mr. Dadzie cautioned commercial drivers against charging unapproved fares at their stations, especially in the evening rush hour.
Some passengers who spoke to Adom news lauded the security taskforce for the intervention.
Some respondents say they get stranded in the hands of these commercial drivers at night.
“You are charging us ¢10 to Ahenema Kokobeng; why are we going to Manso? It’s too bad,” said a commuter.
The security taskforce includes the police, military and other KMA officers.
