Ghana coach Otto Addo has praised Japan’s composure and clinical edge after the Black Stars were outplayed in a 2–0 defeat to open their 2025 Kirin Cup campaign on Friday at Toyota Stadium.
Takumi Minamino and Ritsu Doan scored on either side of halftime, capping a commanding display from the hosts, who controlled the tempo for much of the match.
Speaking after the game, Addo admitted his side struggled to match Japan’s energy and precision.
“Overall, we lost to Japan in terms of the number of shots they took,” the 50-year-old said. “Japan also started the second half very well. They controlled the game better and created clearer chances. We have to admit that they deserved the win.”
He added that Ghana’s plan to stay organised was undone by Japan’s swift transitions and clinical finishing.
“This is the level of intensity we must be prepared for. Japan were very efficient, very aggressive, and they punished our mistakes,” Addo said.
The Black Stars will conclude their November fixtures on Tuesday against Korea Republic.
