The KGL Group of Companies has celebrated the successful conclusion of the 2025 Democracy Cup, a civic-sporting initiative spearheaded by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and the Parliament of Ghana.
The tournament, designed to harness football’s unifying spirit, aimed at promoting democratic values and engaging the nation’s youth.
As a lead sponsor, KGL Group played a central role from the launch through to the final, reflecting its mission of being a force for good in the communities it serves.
“At the KGL Group, of which I have the honour to serve as executive chairman, we are a proudly Ghanaian and leading African tech conglomerate,” said Executive Chairman Alex Apau Dadey.
“We believe that true success lies in our ability to give back meaningfully to the communities we serve. Our commitment to responsible corporate citizenship is not just an obligation—it is a deep, enduring conviction that drives everything we do. Entrepreneurship without philanthropy doesn’t mean anything,” he added.
The grand finale, held on Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, brought together political leaders, civic actors, football fans, students, and citizens in a vibrant celebration of Ghana’s democratic journey.
Ahead of the showdown, the Democracy Cup caravan toured governance institutions, including the palaces of traditional rulers, the Armed Forces, Electoral Commission, Judiciary, and the Presidency.
Organisers also announced plans to expand the initiative to Germany and the United Kingdom in 2026.
President John Dramani Mahama, who performed the ceremonial kickoff, praised the tournament’s symbolic role.
“This cup is not just a trophy but a national symbol. May this cup remind us daily that democracy is not an event but a living process, one we must all work together to protect and deepen for generations to come,” he said.
He further highlighted football’s principles of “rules, fairness, discipline, and mutual respect” as values that resonate strongly with young people, before dedicating the trophy to the resilience of all Ghanaians.
The curtain-raiser featured a Parliamentary XI captained by former Black Stars midfielder Agyemang Badu against a Judiciary XI led by ex-Black Stars defender John Mensah.
The highlight of the evening was a local derby between Accra Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak. After a cagey first half, Hearts sealed a 1–0 victory in the 70th minute through substitute Kwesi Asmah, ending their eight-game winless run against their rivals.
“The Democracy Cup is a vivid example of how the private sector can foster civic engagement and rally the energy of Ghanaians,” said Mr. Dadey.
“At KGL Group, we have always believed that our success means little if it does not translate into progress for the communities we serve. The Democracy Cup is more than football; it is about strengthening the values that hold our society together, because building a just, united, and hopeful nation is work we must all do together.”
The closing ceremony also revealed new opportunities beyond Ghana, with Hearts of Oak set to play a friendly in Germany.
Fans at the stadium were treated to giveaways, Man of the Match prizes, and raffles—reinforcing the tournament’s blend of sport, civic education, and national pride.
The 2025 Democracy Cup thus ended not only as a football contest but as a powerful statement of unity, democracy, and the enduring influence of the beautiful game in Ghana’s civic life.
