The campaign team of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has strongly condemned what it calls “baseless, uninformed and unwarranted” attacks from Kennedy Agyapong as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its presidential primaries.

In a statement released on January 20, the campaign expressed concern over a circulating video in which Mr. Agyapong allegedly accused Dr. Bawumia of commenting on the health of the late Prof. Albert Adu Boahen and claiming he once decided not to contest the NPP’s 1996 presidential primaries.

The Bawumia campaign dismissed the accusations, insisting that no such remarks were ever made by the former Vice President.

“For absolute clarity, Dr. Bawumia has never made the statements that have been attributed to him,” the statement stressed, challenging Mr. Agyapong to “produce the video or audio evidence without further delay if he stands by this baseless attack.”

The campaign also criticised Mr. Agyapong for publicly describing Dr. Bawumia as dishonest and unsuitable for leadership, warning that such rhetoric threatens unity within the party.

“In our political discourse, accuracy matters. Words also matter. Wrongful attributions have the potential to unnecessarily mislead the public and inflame tensions within our Party,” the statement said.

Urging calm and responsibility, the campaign called on Mr. Agyapong to withdraw the comments and offer an apology, noting that Dr. Bawumia prioritises issue-based politics over personal attacks.

“Dr. Bawumia believes that as leaders, we must always state our views devoid of tantrums and personal insults while maintaining truthfulness, decorum, and restraint at all times,” the statement, signed by Nana Akomeah, Chairman of Campaign Communications, added.

The campaign concluded by affirming its focus on promoting unity and a respectful contest as the NPP prepares to select its flagbearer.
