The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ken Ashigbey, has commended the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) for its prompt and responsible response to concerns regarding activities at the Osu Cemetery.

His remarks come after the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Korle Klottey, Alfred Allotey Gaisie, announced a two-month suspension of all burials at the cemetery. The decision follows reports of grave desecration and alleged illegal and unethical burial practices.

The moratorium, effective immediately, is intended to allow for a comprehensive assessment, audit, and restructuring of the cemetery’s management system.

Speaking to Citi FM’s Citi News, Mr. Ashigbey urged the Assembly to use the suspension period to review the cemetery’s layout and operations thoroughly. He also recommended the adoption of modern technology to improve planning, mapping, and record-keeping.

“There is technology available to do proper mapping and accurately determine coordinates. Every cemetery is a finite space, so planning is critical. Once it is full, there must be clear plans for relocation,” he said.

Mr. Ashigbey added that the two-month suspension offers an important opportunity to address longstanding challenges at the cemetery.

“Now that the MCE has announced this two-month moratorium, it should be used effectively to put the right systems in place,” he noted.

The suspension comes amid growing public concern over alleged grave desecration and unauthorised burial activities, prompting calls for stricter oversight and improved management of the historic site.

KoKMA has assured residents and stakeholders that updates will be communicated once the assessment and restructuring exercise is completed.
