The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has dismissed claims that it detains patients who are unable to pay their medical bills.

In a press statement issued on January 12, 2026, management said it had noted recent media commentary alleging that some patients were being held at the hospital due to outstanding expenses, stressing that such claims are false.

“KATH does not detain patients under any circumstances,” the statement said.

The hospital explained that instances in which patients remain on the ward beyond their official discharge date usually occur because patients or their families face financial challenges in settling treatment costs. Management emphasized that these situations should not be misconstrued as detention.

KATH added that patients who remain in the facility continue to receive medical care, meals, and basic support until appropriate arrangements are made. The statement also acknowledged the role of benevolent individuals, corporate bodies, faith-based groups, and other organizations that sometimes assist patients in clearing outstanding bills.

The hospital appealed to the media and public to avoid sharing information that misrepresents its operations, warning that such reports could undermine public confidence.

KATH reaffirmed its commitment to quality healthcare, compassion, professionalism, and respect for the dignity and rights of all patients.
