Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito says unity and player discipline will be key if the club is to replicate the historic CAF Confederation Cup run he masterminded with Dreams FC.
In April 2024, Zito guided Dreams FC to a remarkable milestone, becoming the first Ghanaian club in 20 years to advance to the knockout stages of the competition. The club also set another record as the only Ghanaian side in two decades to secure two away wins in the knockout phase of a CAF inter-club competition.
Now in charge of Kotoko, Zito will lead the Porcupine Warriors in the Confederation Cup for the first time since 2021 when they face Nigeria’s Kwara United in the preliminary round.
Kotoko are chasing their first knockout stage appearance in the competition since 2004, when they lost the final to rivals Hearts of Oak.
The first leg is set for Sunday, September 21, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the return fixture scheduled for a week later in Ilorin.
“There were some factors that helped Dreams FC, and I hope those factors will also help here,” Zito told Luv FM. “Everybody was giving their best, from the board down to the ball boy. Players were disciplined and united.
“I’m trying to bring those same values here. If we unite, follow instructions, and do what we’re supposed to do, we will be okay,” he added.
Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 GMT.
