AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has described representing Ghana as a lifelong dream fulfilled.
The 25-year-old, who debuted for the Black Stars in 2022, has since earned more than 30 caps for the national team.
Speaking to the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), Semenyo reflected on his deep connection to the team he grew up admiring.
“Dream come true [representing Ghana]. I think as a kid we always used to watch Ghana. Every African Cup of Nations, every World Cup campaign. We would always go to my uncle’s house in central London, and we would watch every single game. Shout and scream and all the emotions you can think of when things were great and when things were bad,” he said.
Semenyo recalled one painful yet unforgettable memory that still lingers, Asamoah Gyan’s missed penalty at the 2010 World Cup, which denied Ghana a historic semi-final place.
“The moment I remember so much is when Asamoah Gyan missed a penalty in the 2010 World Cup. I just remember that day like it was yesterday because the way we were running around the house, it was crazy, but it’s an honour,” he reflected.
Now part of the team he once cheered from afar, Semenyo says wearing Ghana’s colours carries deep meaning for him and his family.
“Everyone talks about playing for Ghana till this day, my mum, my dad, my uncles, aunties, everyone you can think of, they always drop me messages saying that they’re so proud of me for how far I have come. Like I said, it’s an honour,” Semenyo added.
A consistent performer for both club and country, Semenyo is widely expected to feature in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the tournament itself.
