The government of India has introduced a temporary immigration relief for Ghanaian nationals living in the country with expired visas, offering them an opportunity to leave without facing the usual penalties.
The move is aimed at streamlining migration management and easing the situation for individuals who have overstayed their visas but have otherwise remained law-abiding. Under the arrangement, affected persons will be granted an Expedited Exit Permit (EEP), allowing them to depart the country through a simplified and lawful process.
This policy was communicated in a diplomatic note sent on March 16, 2026, to the Ghana High Commission in India, outlining the framework for implementation.
The amnesty is intended for individuals who have fallen out of legal status due to visa expiration but are not involved in any criminal activity. Authorities have made it clear that applicants must not have any pending legal cases or be undergoing trial. In addition, eligible individuals are required to present valid travel documents, such as a passport or emergency travel certificate, along with proof of a confirmed flight out of the country.
The window for this arrangement began on March 1 and will remain open until May 31, 2026. Ghanaian nationals seeking to benefit from the initiative are expected to apply through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office online platform.
Through the introduction of the EEP system, Indian authorities aim to facilitate a smooth and penalty-free exit process, while also reducing pressure on immigration enforcement structures, including detention facilities and legal processes.
The Ghana High Commission is urging its citizens in India to take advantage of the opportunity, describing it as a rare chance to resolve their immigration status without financial or legal repercussions.

Officials have cautioned that failure to comply within the stipulated period could result in serious consequences, including fines, deportation, and possible bans on future entry into India.
The development reflects broader cooperation between the two countries as they work to manage migration issues more effectively while sustaining strong diplomatic relations.
