I’m a proud farmer; nobody needs to remind me – Akandoh tells GRNMA General Secretary

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has dismissed criticisms suggesting his farming background makes him unqualified to lead the Ministry.

The comments stemmed from Dr David Tenkorang, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, who faulted the Minister’s handling of the recent violent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

Dr Tenkorang argued that Mr Akandoh lacked a deeper appreciation of hospital operations because “he is a farmer.”

Responding at a press conference on Thursday, the Minister described such remarks as misplaced and a needless distraction.

He explained that medical training is not the only qualification required to serve effectively in the role.

“I understand, on the more lighter note, I have been reminded of the fact that I am a farmer. Yes, nobody needs to remind me. I am a proud farmer, and everybody knows it. Until my appointment I was one of the largest rice farmers in this country. I am proud of that,” he said.

Mr Akandoh stressed that his focus remains on tackling pressing issues in Ghana’s health sector rather than debating his professional background.

“Please, we have a lot to deliver, and some of these things will not divert our attention. We will continue to do our best for mother Ghana,” he stated.
