The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alexander Kotey, has expressed a bold ambition to produce a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating a final at the FIFA World Cup.
According to Kotey, Ghana has the talent and potential to reach the highest level of international refereeing if the right development structures are put in place.
He noted that the vision goes beyond the current pool of officials and includes nurturing a new generation of referees who can compete on the global stage.
“I want to produce a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating a FIFA World Cup final. It is an ambitious target, but one I believe is achievable,” he told Ghana FA media.
“If it doesn’t come from the current crop of FIFA referees we have, then I’m confident it will come from the next generation. Either way, we will get there,” he added.
Currently, Ghana’s top international referee is Daniel Laryea, who was part of the officiating team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
