Former Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat and current Member of Parliament for Abuakwa, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has defended his stewardship at the Secretariat, taking a sharp swipe at the conduct of the current Registrar.
Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Morning Show, Dr. Agyemang questioned the leadership style of his successor, Kwaku Asafo Agyei, insisting that the approach to handling issues does not befit the high office.
“The current Registrar should understand diplomacy and respect the office he occupies. I would like to summarize it with a proverb which states; ‘Why would you send a headless person to bring you wisdom?’”
Addressing recent controversies about debt at the Secretariat, Dr. Agyemang revealed that he inherited liabilities of GH¢230 million in 2017 but chose not to make it a public spectacle, unlike the current administration.
“I met a debt of Gh¢230m in 2017 but I never made noise about it. The office should be handled with a high level of diplomacy,” He stated.
On allegations surrounding how scholarships were awarded under his tenure, Dr. Agyemang insisted due processes were followed.
He explained that geopolitically, some scholarship schemes allow for spousal sponsorship and that he could not be faulted for approving dependents of beneficiaries.
He added that scholarships were extended beyond political lines, benefiting members of the opposition NDC, the clergy, and the media, although he declined to mention names.
“Some scholarships allow for dependents to be added to beneficiaries. I did not breach any law as Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat. I awarded scholarships to some NDC, NPP and even the clergy. I am ready to submit myself to any investigation,” he stressed
