A journalist with Class Media, Samuel Addo, has formally reported to the police an alleged assault and robbery by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) while covering a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market.

The incident occurred last week as Mr. Addo was reporting on the fire. In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, the journalist recounted that after filing a report for a morning show, he proceeded to a nearby fire station to obtain the GNFS’s official account of the incident.

According to him, upon arrival at the station, he witnessed fire service officers allegedly assaulting some civilians and decided to record the scene.

“As I was filming, a young fire service officer approached me. I introduced myself as a media person, and he walked away,” Mr. Addo said.

He explained that the situation later escalated when about ten officers, including the same personnel, allegedly confronted him.

“They held my neck, pulled my hands behind my back, and assaulted me. They took my phone, tore my belt, and took both away,” he stated.

Mr. Addo said his mobile phone was later retrieved through the intervention of the Member of Parliament for the area, Phyllis Naa Koryor.

However, he later realised that GHS10,200 was missing from the GHS20,000 he had in his possession at the time.

He confirmed that he has since been issued a police medical form and is proceeding to a hospital for treatment, adding that the missing cash has not been recovered.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
