Honourable Aponkye, the former Assemblyman aspirant who gained public attention during the 2019 elections, is struggling to walk following a hit-and-run accident at Angloga Junction in Kumasi.
In an interview with Poleeno Multimedia, Hon. Aponkye recounted that he had traveled from Asewase to Kumasi to process documents validating his candidature for his political party ahead of the last elections. The accident occurred while he was attempting to board a commercial vehicle.
“I heard a sudden noise warning me of danger. Before I could react, the car was very close. I tried to dodge but fell in the middle of the road, and the car ran over my leg,” he explained, adding that the driver failed to stop.
The collision left his leg severely crushed, causing extensive injuries and heavy bleeding. Hon. Aponkye described the ordeal as traumatic, noting that initial visits to major hospitals offered little hope, with some doctors indicating that little could be done to save the limb.
He was later referred to a bone specialist who has since been managing his condition. Hon. Aponkye underwent surgery at the Duayaw Nkwanta Government Hospital, where damaged bone tissue was removed and skin grafting performed to aid recovery.
He revealed that he came close to losing his leg, but doctors successfully saved it after multiple interventions. A third and final surgery is expected in the coming weeks.
Currently, Hon. Aponkye relies on crutches and assistance from others as he continues his recovery. He has appealed to well-meaning individuals to provide financial support to help him regain full mobility.
