Health Minister warns health facilities over poor maintenance culture

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has cautioned healthcare officials across the country to take maintenance of facilities seriously, warning that he will personally conduct unannounced visits to ensure compliance.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Akandoh expressed concern over what he described as Ghana’s “poor maintenance culture,” noting that many health facilities neglect routine upkeep despite generating internal revenue.

“Our maintenance culture in Ghana is very poor. I sometimes visit some of these facilities, and I am not far from them, so health professionals should do their jobs well. If I notice something that is not acceptable, you will be held accountable for it,” he said.

The Minister disclosed that he has tasked the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service to hold accountable officials who fail to perform their duties.

He added that the ministry will soon introduce Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all agencies under the Health Ministry.

Mr. Akandoh emphasized that the new measures aim to ensure efficiency, accountability, and the proper use of resources within Ghana’s healthcare system.

“I have tasked the Director General with addressing this; those who need to be queried will be, and those who deserve to be punished will be. Most of the facilities generate funds internally, but they are always waiting on the government to do the bare minimum.

“There are many improvements we are gradually putting in place, and we will sign Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with all the agencies. If you are unable to fulfill your responsibilities, you will have to answer for it,” he said.
