The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing the Ghana Defence University, assuring the Military High Command that strategic steps are underway to bring the vision to fruition.

Speaking during a site inspection of the proposed university location, the Minister disclosed that the government, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), is finalizing plans to secure sustainable funding and provide essential infrastructure for the institution’s launch. He revealed that GH¢25 million has been earmarked as seed funding under the 2026 GETFund formula to support the initial phase of the project.

Hon. Iddrisu also noted that efforts are ongoing to establish the necessary legal framework for the university, adding that he is working with the Office of the Attorney-General to finalize a draft bill for submission to Parliament.

Describing the Ghana Armed Forces as a “beacon of discipline and professionalism,” the Minister emphasized the importance of aligning military training with modern technological advancements. He recommended expanding the university’s academic scope to include emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence.

The Minister was accompanied on the inspection by Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, who praised his leadership and proactive role in driving the project.

Also addressing the event, Chief of Defence Staff William Agyapong highlighted that the university will not only serve the Ghana Armed Forces but also provide professional training for other security agencies, including the Police Service, Prisons Service, and allied institutions in Ghana and neighboring countries.

Once established, the Ghana Defence University is expected to become a center of excellence in military education, research, and strategic training, contributing to national development, regional cooperation, and enhanced security capacity.
