The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Taskforce has arrested five commercial drivers at Kaneshie for charging unauthorised fares and engaging in the widely criticised practice known as “short-short” loading.

Confirming the operation to Adom News, National Guard Commander of the GPRTU Taskforce, Dromond Ekow Gaizie, said the drivers were apprehended during a routine enforcement exercise aimed at protecting passengers from exploitation.

He noted that the suspects are currently assisting investigators at the Kaneshie Police Station.

Mr Gaizie revealed that the operation almost turned chaotic when one driver attempted to flee with his vehicle, which had already been impounded.

“In trying to escape, the driver drove off with the impounded vehicle while a GPRTU taskforce officer was still escorting it to the police station,” he said, adding that the situation was quickly brought under control.

The GPRTU Taskforce has since cautioned commercial drivers to strictly adhere to approved fares and avoid short-short loading, warning that enforcement exercises will continue across major transport terminals.

Passengers have also been urged to report drivers who violate fare regulations to union officials or the police.

Commuters at Kaneshie say the practice has become increasingly common, especially in the evenings. Some passengers told Adom News that drivers often carry passengers over short distances and demand extra money, leaving commuters either stranded midway or forced to pay more than the approved fare.
