The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has denied authorising any increase in transport fares despite growing complaints of congestion and long passenger queues in major towns.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, GPRTU Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah explained that traffic congestion is largely caused by the increasing number of passengers, vehicle breakdowns, and poor road conditions.

According to him, many commercial vehicles are currently off the roads due to mechanical faults, while some drivers avoid badly deteriorated roads, resulting in shortages at terminals during peak hours.

“It is not our intention to withhold vehicles from passengers. We remain committed to providing adequate transport services,” he stressed.

Another GPRTU PRO, Alex Amoah, also clarified that the union has not sanctioned any fare increases in response to traffic congestion or vehicle shortages.

“The GPRTU has not authorised any fare increments. Any driver charging unapproved fares is acting in their own interest and not on behalf of the union,” he stated.

He added that the union has held discussions with the Ministry of Transport, with the Vice President in attendance, to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing commuters.

The GPRTU has assured the public that it does not support arbitrary fare hikes and is working with relevant authorities to address congestion and improve transport services.
