Gov’t cuts Black Stars World Cup qualifier budget by over $730,000

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has revealed significant savings on the Black Stars’ budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to promote transparency and fiscal discipline in sports financing.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, Sports Minister Kofi Adams stated that the government approved a final budget of $1,320,490 to cover Matchday 7 against Chad on September 4, 2025, and Matchday 8 against Mali on September 8, 2025. This represents a substantial reduction from the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) initial proposal of $2,053,240, yielding total savings of $732,750.

The budget approval process involved four stages: submission of estimates by the GFA, review and adjustment by the Ministry to align with government fiscal policy, vetting by the Presidency, and final clearance by the Ministry of Finance.

Key cuts included reducing player bonuses from $10,000 to $5,000 per win, trimming coaches’ and management bonuses, rationalising travel and transport expenses, and lowering imprests and facility fees. For example, the GFA’s home game budget at Accra Sports Stadium was reduced from $814,150 to $463,600, saving $350,550.

Minister Adams said the exercise demonstrates the government’s commitment to accountability and prudent use of public funds. “Across both match windows, we have realised total savings of $732,750. This shows government’s resolve to protect taxpayers while ensuring the essentials required for the Black Stars to perform are fully funded,” he stated.

He commended the GFA for cooperating with the review process and praised players for accepting revised bonus arrangements in line with Ghana’s economic realities. “The Ministry will continue to work with the GFA to align national team expenditure with the realities of Ghana’s economy,” he added.
