Government has assured the public of minimal disruption to electricity supply as the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) undertakes a scheduled maintenance exercise on its gas facilities in Ghana on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), said it has been officially notified that the mandatory maintenance will take place between 6:00am and 3:00pm. The exercise will result in a temporary interruption of gas supply to thermal power plants located in Tema.
In a statement issued on January 17, GRIDCo explained that the maintenance is a critical safety measure aimed at safeguarding the long-term reliability and integrity of the gas supply infrastructure.
According to the statement, the exercise forms part of routine operational requirements necessary to ensure the safe transportation of gas across the pipeline network.
To cushion consumers from any adverse impact on electricity generation, GRIDCo indicated that adequate alternative fuel arrangements have been put in place to maintain a stable power supply throughout the maintenance period.
“Adequate alternative fuel arrangements have been put in place to guarantee the continuity of power generation and to maintain a stable electricity supply throughout the duration of the works,” the statement said.
GRIDCo added that stakeholders across the energy value chain will remain actively engaged during the maintenance exercise, with continuous monitoring to ensure the work is completed safely and within the scheduled timeframe.
The company has apologised to the public for any inconvenience the maintenance may cause and appealed for cooperation and understanding, stressing that the exercise is being carried out in the interest of national energy security.
