The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) will commence a nationwide compliance exercise on December 18, 2025, to ensure that all vehicles on the road are equipped with functional and GNFS-certified portable fire extinguishers.

The exercise will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

According to the GNFS, the taskforce will conduct on-the-spot fire safety checks, issue certification tags for approved fire extinguishers, and provide technical guidance in line with the Ghana National Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537).

As part of the operation, the Service will engage transport unions and associations nationwide to educate drivers and vehicle owners on the importance of carrying at least one serviceable, GNFS-certified fire extinguisher, ensuring proper installation and accessibility, and training drivers in its safe use.

Drivers are also being encouraged to keep other safety items, such as warning triangles and first-aid kits, in their vehicles.

The GNFS stressed that having a certified fire extinguisher within reach can prevent minor vehicle fires from escalating into major disasters, reaffirming its commitment to road safety through public education and strict enforcement measures.
