No casualties in Suame Post Office fire – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that no lives were lost in the devastating fire that gutted parts of the Suame Post Office area in Kumasi on Tuesday night.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, GNFS said it received a distress call at 11:46 p.m. about the blaze, which involved several commercial shops.

A team from the Breman Fire Station, led by STNO II Boseah, arrived at 11:57 p.m. to meet an already escalating fire.

The flames were battled “both offensively and defensively” and brought under control at 2:06 a.m. with reinforcement from the Manhyia, RHQ Substation, and Mamponteng Fire Stations. Final extinguishment was completed at 10:43 a.m.

The inferno destroyed 25 out of 44 shops and 192 sheds within the facility, with properties worth millions of cedis reduced to ashes. Eyewitnesses reported that exploding gas cylinders stored at the market fueled the rapid spread of the blaze.

“Fortunately, no fatalities or casualties have been recorded as at the time of this report. Investigators are currently at the scene to determine the cause of this devastating fire,” the statement added.
