The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced plans by the government to launch a new coastal sea transport service connecting Accra to Nigeria via Togo and Benin.

The initiative is expected to reduce pressure on heavily used road networks across the West African sub-region.

According to the Minister, a private investor has already acquired two large vessels to begin marine transport operations along the coastline.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV, the Saboba Member of Parliament said the vessels will transport both passengers and cargo, offering an alternative to long-distance road travel between Ghana and its eastern neighbours.

“I am pleased to announce that an investor has brought in two sizeable ships that will soon commence operations from Ghana’s coast through to Nigeria,” he said. The service will make stops in Lomé and Cotonou before ending in Nigeria.

Mr Nikpe explained that the initiative is expected to ease congestion along key transport corridors, including the Volta route, which is frequently used for cross-border movement of people and goods.

He added that the sea transport service will provide a safer, more efficient, and less stressful option for travellers and freight operators, particularly those seeking to avoid long hours on congested highways.

The planned service forms part of broader efforts to diversify Ghana’s transport system and enhance regional connectivity through alternative modes of travel.
