The Government of the Republic of Ghana has formally affirmed its commitment to host the 24th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Senior Athletics Championships following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Confederation of African Athletics and Ghana Athletics.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adam, thereby confirming Ghana as the host nation for the continental championship, which is scheduled to take place from 12th to 17th May, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon, Accra.
The official signing ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and was witnessed by a distinguished delegation from the Confederation of African Athletics, led by the President of CAA, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lamine Fati. Also in attendance was the CAA Region II delegation, headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa, who serves as the First Vice President of CAA and President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
The ceremony was further attended by the leadership of Ghana Athletics, led by its President, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, alongside representatives of key national sporting institutions, including the Ghana Olympic Committee, led by Lawyer Richard Akakpovie, and the National Sports Authority, represented by the Deputy Director-General (Technical), Madam Veronica Commey.
Other relevant institutions and strategic stakeholders were also present, collectively expressing confidence in Ghana’s preparedness and institutional capacity to deliver a successful and well-organised championship.
The execution of the MoU between the Confederation of African Athletics, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation formally signifies Ghana’s acceptance of hosting responsibilities and its commitment to meeting all technical, organisational, and infrastructural requirements for the successful staging of the Championships.
Earlier in the day, delegations from the Confederation of African Athletics and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy calls on the National Sports Authority and the Ghana Olympic Committee as part of stakeholder engagements towards preparations for the Championships. The delegation also undertook an inspection visit to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to assess facility readiness and compliance with CAA standards.
The hosting of the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships is expected to bring together elite athletes from across the African continent and further consolidate Ghana’s standing as a preferred destination for major international sporting events.
