Ghana seal 2026 World Cup qualification with narrow win over Comoros

The Black Stars of Ghana capped off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in style with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Head coach Otto Addo named a strong lineup for the decisive fixture, bringing back defender Alidu Seidu, who returned from a long injury layoff, alongside Jonas Adjetey and Francis Annan.

Ghana entered the match needing just a point to secure their place at next year’s tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, following their emphatic 5-0 win over the Central African Republic.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with both teams enjoying spells of possession. Ghana came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute when Jordan Ayew’s clever movement and footwork nearly unlocked the Comoros defence. The visitors, however, also threatened on the counter, forcing goalkeeper Benjamin Asare into action to keep the first half goalless.

The Black Stars came out firing after the break and were rewarded just two minutes into the second half. Mohammed Kudus latched onto a precise square pass from Thomas Partey and calmly slotted home to give Ghana the lead in the 47th minute.

Addo’s men maintained control of the game, pressing high and creating several chances, but failed to extend their advantage. As the game wore on, the Ghana coach refreshed his side with a triple substitution, introducing Gideon Mensah, Caleb Yirenkyi, and debutant Kojo Oppong Peprah for Kudus, Kwasi Sibo, and Alidu Seidu.

Ghana continued to dominate possession, with Antoine Semenyo’s late cross narrowly missing Yirenkyi inside the box. In the closing stages, Jordan Ayew and Semenyo made way for Brandon Thomas-Asante and Christopher Baah-Bonsu to see out the final minutes.

The victory ensured Ghana topped Group I with 25 points, confirming their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to December’s group stage draw, where they will discover their opponents for the global showpiece.
