Ghana risks importing water if… – Nana Yaa Jantuah warns

Presidential Staffer and Head of the Utility Review Hearing Committee, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has warned that Ghana risks importing water in the near future if illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is not brought under control.

Speaking at a public hearing on utility tariff proposals in Accra, she cautioned that uncontrolled galamsey operations are severely polluting the country’s major water bodies, posing a grave threat to both domestic consumption and industrial use.

“We have an issue at hand, and everybody knows what it is, and that is galamsey. Because of galamsey, the Ghana Water Company faces major challenges in treating water for public use. If the situation is not checked, Ghana could soon become water-poor,” she stated.

Ms. Jantuah further warned that such a development would increase costs for citizens and businesses, with the poor suffering the most.

“Water poverty means Ghana might have to import water, and in such a case, the poor will not be able to afford it. That is why we need to depoliticise the fight against galamsey and work together to protect our water resources,” she added.
