Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced plans to introduce a mobile application to regulate and standardise spare parts pricing, following what he described as the highest transport fare reduction in Ghana’s history.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Nikpe said government, in collaboration with transport unions, successfully negotiated a 15 percent reduction in transport fares last year.

However, he explained that drivers were initially unwilling to reduce fares further because of the high cost of spare parts, a situation they attributed to the instability of the exchange rate at the time.

According to the Minister, the relative stability of the cedi and fuel prices should now translate into reduced spare parts costs.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Trade is developing a mobile application that will provide information on the prices and locations of spare parts, with the aim of promoting transparency and fair pricing across the sector.

Mr. Nikpe expressed confidence that these measures would help sanitise and decongest cities, improve traffic flow, and enhance the overall efficiency of the transport sector.

He added that government is also committed to retooling state-owned transport agencies such as Metro Mass Transit and STC, while working with the National Road Safety Authority to roll out a vigorous nationwide road safety campaign.
