German Language Day at GISA celebrates cultural exchange and creativity

-

The German Language Day at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Accra (GISA) turned into a vibrant celebration of connection, creativity, and cultural exchange.

The event brought together students, teachers, diplomats, and language enthusiasts for a day filled with learning, laughter, and collaboration.

The Deputy German Ambassador, Sivine Jansen, opened the event with an inspiring message about the power of the German language to bridge cultures.

She noted that German is not only a language of history and art but also of science, research, and international partnership—underscoring the strong educational ties between Ghana and Germany.

From the start, the GISA campus buzzed with excitement. Institutions, universities, and language centres set up interactive booths to share opportunities for learning and studying in German-speaking countries.

The Goethe-Institut drew a crowd with its “Learn German in 5 Minutes” challenge, while the German Embassy’s quiz “1, 2 oder 3” delighted children and young learners.

The DAAD, the German Protestant Church in Accra, and GISA’s own information stands also played key roles in the day’s success.

Visitors showed great interest in GISA’s academic programmes and its Excellence Scholarship, which remains open until 31 October 2025. The GISA Support Association also engaged attendees, inviting new members to join their mission of supporting the school’s growth.

One of the standout moments came from the PASCH partner school Opoku Ware School in Sunyani, whose delegation travelled 11 hours to attend—an inspiring example of dedication to German language education.

PASCH (Schools: Partners for the Future) is a global initiative of the German Foreign Office, promoting German learning and cross-cultural understanding worldwide.

GISA students showcased their talents under the theme “Deutsch verbindet – German connects.” Projects ranged from fairy tales, fashion shows, and rap performances in the primary section to comic design, castle research, and time travel projects in the Secondary level.

The culmination was a lively stage show and exhibition celebrating creativity and teamwork.

The kindergarten opened its doors to curious guests, while the Parent Council added warmth to the event with coffee and homemade cakes at the Swiss Club.

Culinary highlights like currywurst, sauerkraut, and sourdough bread gave visitors a delicious taste of Germany.

Performances from the Accragio Choir, University of Cape Coast, Accra Academy, and other schools filled the stage with energy and artistic flair.

Martin Wilde of the Catholic Technical Institute in Kumasi emphasized the growing value of German in vocational training, linking language learning to practical career pathways.

Meanwhile, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), highlighted the training of Ghana’s first German teachers—a milestone in strengthening bilateral education ties.

Four UEW students supported GISA in setting up exhibitions, reflecting the spirit of teamwork that defined the day.

As the sun set, the GG Brass Band filled the air with music, closing the event on a lively and joyful note.

Beyond the festivities, German Language Day at GISA stood out as a celebration of partnership, learning, and the simple truth that language connects us all.
