The government’s intensified fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has achieved another milestone in the Ahafo Region.
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), in a recent operation, raided an illegal mining site at Bronikrom–Hwediem and arrested several suspects, including a Burkinabe national.
The development was disclosed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
He explained that the operation formed part of NAIMOS’ nationwide efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities that continue to degrade the environment.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted that the galamsey site was situated dangerously close to a major road — barely ten meters from the Hwediem–Goaso Highway — highlighting the brazenness of the operators.
“NAIMOS continues to strike at the heart of illegal mining. This time, they flushed out operators at Bronikrom–Hwediem in the Ahafo Region and arrested several individuals, including a Burkinabe,” he wrote.
He reaffirmed the government’s determination to intensify anti-galamsey operations to protect the country’s natural resources and safeguard communities affected by illegal mining.
