A special task force from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a coordinated operation against illegal mining activities in Hiawa, in the Amenfi Central District, as part of ongoing national efforts to curb galamsey.

During the operation, officers dismantled and destroyed equipment being used at several unauthorized mining locations. Items removed included improvised shelters, water pumping machines, wooden gold-washing platforms and other tools linked to the illicit operations.

The latest action follows intelligence reports that illegal miners had returned to previously cleared sites, prompting NAIMOS to intensify enforcement in the area.

Officials say the renewed crackdown is aimed at halting activities that continue to cause extensive environmental degradation, including the pollution of water bodies, loss of forest cover and the destruction of farmlands.

The task force noted that such operations are often carried out in blatant violation of Ghana’s environmental protection laws and mining regulations.

NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on illegal mining networks and protecting vulnerable communities and ecosystems from further damage.
