The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has ordered the immediate suspension of construction on a structure near the East Legon Police Station overpass, citing concerns over public safety and possible violations of spatial planning regulations.

The directive came after an unscheduled site inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Minister and a technical team, following reports of a new structure being erected close to the overpass.

Personnel at the site claimed the project had a valid permit. However, preliminary assessments raised serious concerns about the structure’s location, particularly its encroachment on the right-of-way and the risk it poses to critical public infrastructure.

As a result, the Council instructed an immediate halt to all construction activities. Developers have also been directed to dismantle any existing framework and remove all construction materials from the site without delay.

The Regional Minister has engaged the Municipal Chief Executive of the relevant Assembly to review and revoke any permit that may have been granted for the construction at that location.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that development in the capital adheres strictly to approved spatial planning and urban development regulations. Authorities warned that structures compromising public safety or circumventing planning standards will not be tolerated and emphasized the need to protect public spaces for orderly and sustainable urban growth.
The Council called on all stakeholders to fully cooperate as enforcement actions continue to safeguard the integrity of public infrastructure in the region.
