The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to immediately remove the GH₵1 fuel levy to help ease the rising cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.

Collins Adomako-Mensah, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, made the appeal during an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

He acknowledged that the government has indicated that removing the levy is under consideration but stressed that decisive action is now necessary.

“The fact that they are even considering it is a good sign, but we want them to move from consideration to action and take the bold step to relieve Ghanaians of some of the burden,” he said.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah highlighted the impact on households, noting that many fuel buyers who previously spent GH₵150 now pay around GH₵200, significantly reducing disposable incomes.

He further warned that rising transport costs, driven by higher diesel prices, could push inflation even higher, intensifying economic pressure on citizens.

The lawmaker called on policymakers to act swiftly, pointing out that other countries affected by global fuel price pressures, including Namibia and India, have already implemented measures to cushion their populations.
