Fire has razed down the female dormitory of the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery College in the Ahafo Region, destroying properties worth thousands of cedis.
According to the Principal of the College, Nana Kwame Amoh Adinkrah, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Friday while students were in class.
He told Adom News’ Sammy Asare that the blaze started on the top floor of one of the female dormitories.
He explained that the school immediately contacted the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for assistance, but by the time officers arrived, most of the students’ belongings had already been destroyed.
Items lost in the fire include money, books, mattresses, bags, uniforms, footwear, and certificates, among others. The Principal noted that first-year students were the most affected by the incident.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asunafo South, Benjamin Yinkah, said the District Assembly, in collaboration with the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), is providing immediate relief to the affected students.
He added that essential items such as mattresses, clothing, buckets, towels, and sponges are being distributed to help the victims.
Mr. Yinkah further revealed that the Member of Parliament for the area, who also serves as the Minister for Food and Agriculture, has been informed of the situation and has pledged to support the affected students and assist in rebuilding the dormitory.
He appealed to benevolent individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the school and the affected students.
