A dawn fire on Tuesday razed nearly 50 wooden structures at the European Town Railway enclave, popularly known as Rails Mu, in Sekondi-Takoradi.
Among the destroyed properties was a church, while scores of residents, including commercial sex workers, were left homeless.
The disaster has drawn public attention because it occurred on September 9—exactly three years after a similar blaze swept through the same community during a clearance operation by city authorities.
Some residents, shocked by the repetition, have called for a probe. “It baffles me why this place catches fire every 9th of September. Authorities must investigate,” an eyewitness said.
Abubakar Karmal, Director of NADMO, revealed that his office had carried out fire safety education in the community just six weeks earlier, warning against unsafe practices such as the use of candles.
According to the Metro Fire Service, the blaze is believed to have started in one of the wooden shacks. DO1 Michael Tetteh noted that firefighters focused on preventing the flames from spreading to installations of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, who toured the site with the Regional Security Council, described the incident as regrettable and stressed the need for readiness and swift response in emergencies.
For many residents, the strange recurrence of fires on the same date has heightened concerns about the safety and future of the Rails Mu community.
